15mm Colonials - Test Game of New Home Rules

I have had the notion in mind for quite some time to come up with a division level set of home solo-wargame rules. But I can't seem to wrap my mind around each unit being a battalion vice a company. Anyway I've been reading a lot of other wargames and books and thought I had come up with a pretty good mesh of ideas/mechanics. However my "plans didn't survive first contact with the enemy." 

The "to hit" mechanic is straightforward for a solo-wargamer. Roll a d6 and score a target goal. Said score inflicts a single fatigue point hit on the target unit.  A command point is required to remove the hit otherwise any unit with a FP has it's capabilities nerfed.  

I had thought that each force would have a set amount of command points to activate units and rally away fatigue points (hits) but this really cripples a force once the bullets start flying. I do want it to have a tactical impact but not one that causes a side to lose completely to it. The Zulus as they drew nearer to the British line were unable to move enough of their units due to the activation spent rallying a hit unit. However that may be more accurate than I think. Perhaps I should increase the foot movement for certain types of forces, like the Zulus.

Further playtesting and more reading is required.

One Hour Warhammer: Skaven vs Tomb Kings - Capture the Bridge Scenario

My son came to visit me today so we took in a few games of MtG and a game of One Hour Warhammer. The only painted armies I have ready so far are Tomb Kings and Skaven. We played the Capture the Bridgehead scenario from the One Hour Wargames book. It was a fun game. The Skaven prevailed.





My bone giant put a whopping on some mice but he ultimately fell.

The Afrika Reich

This book appears to go along with some of the themes I've laid out for my Second World War Project. If you look at this battle that I played out using Memoir '44 you will see similarities. The map the author has provided is simply amazing. This book will soon find a place in my home library.

15mm Elves vs Barbarians - One Hour Wargames

I put on a fantasy demo of One Hour Wargames. Using 15mm Wood Elves and Barbarians. Both forces met at a small farming village. The ensuing battle was bloody for both sides with the Barbarians prevailing and holding the farms and main road through the village.  The game was fairly quick, it only lasted 12 turns.  One Hour Wargames is still the best set of rules I've purchased in years.

WW2: 15mm One Hour Wargames Battle - Germans vs Yanks

A reinforced American battalion was ordered to protect the flank of the logistical elements of their division as the division moves towards Germany. Meanwhile the Germans had sent a kampfgruppe to hit the American supply lines. Both forces met at a small farming village in Western Germany. The ensuing battle was bloody for both sides with the Americans prevailing and holding the main road through the village.

The game was quick, it only lasted 10 turns.  We remembered that units cannot move and shoot but must pick one or the other. That has been a hard concept to swallow as years of habit say move, shoot and close combat.  One Hour Wargames is still the best set of rules I've purchased in years.

2016 Prussian National Elections

Koenigsberg (AP): The Chief Counsel of Prussia Brigitta Olson swore in the new National Assembly today and a few hours later she welcomed back Jaap von Huack as Chancellor of Prussia. This will be his second term in the chancellery.  Chancellor von Huack was a clear favorite over his rival, Conrad Hekel the former first Chancellor.  Outgoing Chancellor Frieda von Moltke and her cabinet have set up their bloc within the National Assembly. She will undoubtedly seek re-election in 2018 when she is eligible to run again. Prussian law forbades any candidate back to back elections to the Chancellery. However the law does not prohibit a future candidacy after a two year term.

Chancellor Jaap von Huack in his acceptance speech outlined some key components of his administration for his two years in office.

  • Continuation of his and former Chancellor von Moltke's financial strategy plan that was developed together in 2013 that saw unprecedented economic growth in Baltic Europe. 
  • Military restructuring and to seek out a replacement for the retiring Commandant.
  • To demand free and fair elections in Southwest Lithuania so that those people there of Prussian descent may choose their future, to either join that area to Prussia or remain a part of Lithuania.
  • Further aid to Heinleinist movements across the world; particularly in war-torn Mafeking.
  • Strengthening of Baltic culture noting Prussia's place within the region and history.
  • He also issued a warning that Prussia will not be intimidated by others and that the recent actions of some neighboring states could have dire consequences.

Winter Plans

We are well settled now into our new home. We closed back on November 24th and immediately had the holidays to prepare for. My new war-room is setup but is still disorganized at present. In fact I've misplaced my "One Hour Wargames" book by Neil Thomas and it's aggravating me.  I've consolidated three of my other blogs into this one. Leaving me with a total of three wargames blogs, historical, sci-fi and fantasy.

Now it's time to begin a good campaign, start another terrain board, continue reading to improve the war effort, paint and simply enjoy the hobby.  Where do I begin? Here is my rough draft of things to do for this winter.



Miniatures

  • Finish painting 10mm Warmaster Chaos Army.
  • Finish flocking my 15mm WW2 Soviet Army.
  • Rebase my Lace-Wars armies.
  • Start 15mm WW2 Italian Army.


Terrain

  • Begin painting/flocking my foam Isandlwana battlefield board.
  • Go to Lowes and buy a 28" square board to set up as a green field for larger battles.
  • Buy hexes and setup a 2'x3' board with hexes that can be changed out.


Army Books
This is a new project I've had in mind. A binder with a collection of rules, scenarios, painting guides, pictures, articles and items that I find to collect on a specific army, period or campaign.


We are expecting snow tomorrow so it will be a good day to start things rolling.  Cheers from Northwest Arkansas.

Pondering Consolidation..

For the past couple of years I have considered reducing the amount of blogs I have and consolidating most of them here. I have reached that conclusion on my modern wargaming interest and began to move that period here last year.

Now I will do the same with my SYW and other lacewars interest as well. That leaves ancients, fantasy and scifi with their own blogs. I am still in the air on consolidating those periods here.

One possibility would be to create new pages for each seperate period campaign to hold the background information. However my fantasy gaming interests would require, possibly, up to seven pages on its own. Which is way too many for this blog.  However I probably have more campaign interests in fantasy than time would allow anyhow.

So I will try out a few new ideas here and see how things look and how well the blog can flow with the new additions. Excuse my mess during the construction.

One Hour Wargames: Scenario 3 Control the River

First Ancients Wargame of 2016. 15mm. One Hour Wargame Rules. Romans vs Gauls. Scenario: Hold the River Crossings.  Each miniature army is part of a larger force that has been detailed to capture and hold two vital river fords.

The battle came down to the wire. It looked like it might be a draw but on the bottom half of Turn 15 (the last turn) the Romans on the right ford killed the Gauls that were holding that side of the river.

I took more pictures but the battlefield didn't change much except for unit removal as both sides attempted to remain at the ford crossings.

I've misplaced my rulebook so I had to spend the extra $3
 and pick up the Kindle version. Thank you Amazon!

The Gauls start the battle deployed on the Northern edge and advance.
The Romans arrive and the Tribune orders the Cavalry to seize the fords at once.

The Roman Ballistae Battery opens up.

The ballistae continues to rain death on the approaching Gauls.

The Roman commander hovered between both fords to direct the
 battle and to serve as a ready reserve should one side fall.






On the bottom half of turn 15 the Roman unit killed the Gauls
 holding the ford.
