Eisenhower Creates the 1st Half-Brigade

GIBRALTAR, British Empire (AP):  June 21, 1942.  Today American General Dwight Eisenhower ordered the creation of an experimental half-brigade of the US Army.  The half-brigade was modeled after existing brigades in Europe.  It is believed that forming these half-brigades will allow US combat forces to better integrate into the Allied Command structure.  General Mark Clark stated "Let's be clear that the half-brigade is an experiment, a combined arms experiment and we will soon test it's vitality."  General Eisenhower chose US Army Colonel William Darby of Fort Smith, Arkansas as it's first commander.  The half-brigade will operate independently of any division and instead report directly to II Corps commander General Lloyd Fredendall.  Colonel Darby is currently in Ireland setting up his brigade.
